Signs your nervous system is stuck in Survival Mode (and why so many mothers don't realise it)

Have you ever reached the end of the day and thought "Why am I so exhausted when I haven't stopped all day?"
Or perhaps you've found yourself snapping at your children over something small, feeling constantly on edge, lying awake despite being utterly exhausted, or wondering why you can never seem to truly relax.
If this sounds familiar, you are far from alone.
For many women and mothers, living in survival mode becomes so normal that they no longer recognise it for what it is.
The body adapts. The mind keeps pushing forward. Life continues.
Until one day you realise that you can't remember the last time you genuinely felt calm.
The good news?
Your nervous system was designed to respond to stress, but it was also designed to return to a state of safety and balance. Sometimes, however, life becomes so busy and demanding that it can feel difficult to find your way back.
What does "Survival Mode" mean?
Your nervous system is constantly scanning your environment, asking one important question:
"Am I safe?"
When the answer is yes, your body can rest, digest, think clearly, connect with others and recover from everyday challenges.
When the nervous system perceives a threat, whether it's an urgent deadline, ongoing worry, conflict, poor sleep, or a genuinely dangerous situation, it prepares you to protect yourself.
This response is commonly known as fight, flight or freeze.
It's an incredible system that has helped humans survive for thousands of years. The challenge is that modern life can keep this response activated for much longer than it was originally designed for.
Many mothers aren't running from wild animals (well, maybe sometimes!). They're running from endless to-do lists.
Why mothers are especially vulnerable
Motherhood is one of life's greatest privileges. It is also one of its greatest responsibilities.
Your brain is constantly processing:
Who needs picking up?
What's for dinner?
Did I reply to that email?
Is my child coping at school?
Have I paid that bill?
Why hasn't the baby slept?
Did I remember everyone's appointments?
This invisible mental load rarely switches off. Even when you're sitting still, your mind often isn't. Over weeks, months or years, this constant state of responsibility can leave many women feeling as though they're always "on."
10 Signs your nervous system may be stuck in survival mode
Everyone experiences stress differently, but many women recognise themselves in one or more of these experiences.
1. You Find It Difficult to Relax
You finally sit down, yet instead of feeling peaceful, your mind races through tomorrow's to-do list.
Rest feels uncomfortable because your body has become accustomed to constant activity.
2. You're Always Tired—But Can't Sleep Well
You feel exhausted all day, then bedtime arrives and suddenly your brain decides it's the perfect time to replay every conversation you've ever had.
3. You Feel Emotionally Overwhelmed
Small problems suddenly feel enormous. You cry more easily or perhaps you feel emotionally flat and disconnected. Both can happen when you've been under prolonged stress.
4. You're Easily Irritated
The shoes left in the hallway, the dishes left in the sink, the sibling arguments, the repeated requests.
Sometimes it's not the shoes, it's that your nervous system has very little capacity left.
5. You Constantly Feel "Busy"
Even during moments of rest, you feel guilty and your body has learned that productivity equals safety. Slowing down feels unfamiliar.
6. Your Body Feels Tight
Do your shoulders seem permanently attached to your ears? Is your jaw constantly clenched? Do you notice tension headaches? Our bodies often reflect the stress we're carrying.
7. You Struggle to Switch Off
Even when you're watching television you're mentally writing tomorrow's shopping list, planning school lunches, thinking about work, remembering appointments etc... Your body is present but your mind never really stops.
8. You Feel Disconnected From Yourself
Some women describe this as feeling like they're living on autopilot. They're functioning and coping but they no longer feel connected to who they are outside of their responsibilities.
9. You're Constantly Looking After Everyone Else
You know exactly when your children need support and when you know when your partner is stressed. But when someone asks how you're doing... you genuinely don't know.
10. You Can't Remember the Last Time You Felt Truly Calm
Not distracted, not temporarily relaxed, not simply scrolling your phone. But genuinely calm.
For many women, it's been a very long time.
Survival Mode isn't a personal failure
One of the biggest misconceptions is believing there's something wrong with you because you feel overwhelmed. There isn't. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
It has been trying to protect you but the problem isn't that your nervous system responds to stress.
It's that modern life often doesn't give it enough opportunities to recover. This isn't about being weak.
It's about being human.
Why listening to your body matters
Our bodies are remarkably intelligent. Long before we consciously recognise we're overwhelmed, our bodies often begin giving us subtle signals. Persistent muscle tension, difficulty slowing down, feeling emotionally reactive and having constant fatigue.
Alongside appropriate medical care, many women also choose complementary therapies to support relaxation, emotional wellbeing and greater self-awareness.
Sometimes the greatest act of self-care isn't pushing harder. It's becoming curious about what your body has been trying to tell you.
How kinesiology can support your wellbeing
At Mother's Instinct Kinesiology, I provide a calm, supportive space where you can step away from the demands of everyday life and reconnect with yourself.
Using gentle muscle monitoring, thoughtful conversation and personalised balancing techniques, kinesiology aims to support your overall wellbeing by helping identify areas of stress and imbalance within the context of the session.
Many women tell me that their session is the first time in months they've truly felt listened to.
The first time they've slowed down. The first time they've prioritised themselves without guilt.
Every session is unique because every woman is unique.
Whether you're navigating the pressures of motherhood, work, life transitions or simply feeling emotionally stretched, your session is tailored to your individual goals and experiences.
Imagine feeling like yourself again
Imagine waking up feeling more present instead of immediately overwhelmed. Imagine responding to your children with greater patience because your own cup feels a little fuller. Imagine giving yourself permission to slow down without feeling guilty. Imagine remembering that you are more than your never-ending to-do list.
When you care for yourself, you're not taking away from your family. You're strengthening the foundation that supports them. A well-supported mother creates a more supported family.
You deserve support too
As women, we're often the first to notice when someone else needs help, but we can be the last to notice when we're quietly running on empty.
You don't have to wait until you reach breaking point before choosing to care for yourself. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is pause.
Take a breath.
Allow yourself to be supported.
At Mother's Instinct Kinesiology, my passion is creating a safe, nurturing space where women and mothers can reconnect with themselves, explore their wellbeing with curiosity, and leave feeling more balanced, grounded and empowered.
Because caring for yourself isn't selfish.
It's one of the greatest gifts you can give both yourself and the people you love.
